Lent is a time for giving

Lenten donations from kindergarten Rüdenhausen für Mix for Kids

Kindergarten Rüdenhausen is collecting for Mix for Kids to benefit a special pair of glasses for Julienne

Practicing abstinence is often not difficult. In a society like ours, characterized by excessive consumption and an overabundance of food and groceries, many people use Lent as an opportunity to voluntarily and temporarily limit themselves. Even the youngest children at the Spatzennest daycare learn that abstinence can be and a way to do good for themselves and others.

In the Rüdenhausen daycare, a fasting breakfast is scheduled every Friday during Lent. After a brief introduction with a prayer led by the caregivers, everyone gets whole-grain bread with butter. The best part: the bread was baked by a kindergarten mother herself; the children don’t seem to feel like they’re missing anything, and in return, parents are asked for a small Lenten donation.

The money raised from the Lenten breakfast goes towards people and children in difficult circumstances every year. This year, the Rüdenhausen kindergarten is considering the Abtswind-based association Mix for Kids. In addition to established projects and partners in Germany, Albania, India and South Africa, Mix for Kids also provides support for individual cases, striving, for example, to make everyday life easier for sick children or children with disabilities and their families.

The same applies in the case of Julienne. The autistic girl with Down syndrome suffers from hypersensitivity to certain light frequencies, which leads to distorted and blurred perceptions of her surroundings. “Letters start dancing, trees wobble, and she no longer dares to walk across the floor without holding on,” explains her mother. Thanks to the now confirmed diagnosis, Julienne receives colour-filtering glasses based on the so-called Irlen method – in her case, blue glasses – to correct the perceptual disturbances.

Mix for Kids is delighted to help fund the cost of this special visual aid using the Lenten donation from the parents of the Rüdenhausen kindergarten. A donation that is greatly appreciated by mum Andrea Bitti, so that her daughter can play and romp around again soon without restrictions. Andrea Bitti herself has been supporting Mix for Kids for years by using her craft skills and repeatedly sending small giveaways to the charity association. Whether they are lavender sachets or reading corners – these lovely gifts enable the non-profit association to raise funds for its own children’s aid projects. So, thanks are due on both sides!
