Sadly, it is the end of the road for the old annex that had housed the sports and play space for indoor activities at the Geesdorf children and adolescent’s home in Germany. With renovations impossible, the home has been left with no choice but to demolish the building. Now, the residence, which nine children and teenagers currently call home, is in urgent need of financial support to fund a new building, and Mix for Kids is determined to help.

Costs cut but donations still urgently needed

Initial estimates for the new building came in at around 250,000 euros. Thanks to the generous donation of former school containers, this figure has been significantly reduced to 120,000 euros, but as things stand the home will still be forced to tap its much-needed reserves to finance the project. “I’m hoping for plenty of donations to help offset the construction costs as much as possible,” says the home’s director Cornelia Süptitz, who also chairs the Kinder- und Jugendheim Geesdorf e.V. association, who run the children’s home.

In light of all this, non-profit Mix for Kids has donated 3,000 euros to help with replacing the annex, having previously supported the children’s home by funding a number of purchases and leisure activities. “We are truly grateful to loyal donors like Mix for Kids, who have supported us for years now,” adds Cornelia Süptitz.

The containers are an exact match for the annex’s floorplan and will house a sports and therapy room along with space for bike storage. However, as the containers are only single-story, two additional shipping containers will be added at the back of the home to house a workshop and act as extra storage space. While this solution can’t compete aesthetically with the old building, Cornelia Süptitz is determined to furnish the containers nicely, and the existing trees and garden will remain.

With the building permit, which includes ecological supervision, now granted, the containers should be in place shortly after demolition in mid-April provided everything goes to plan.
